People who are in the market for a new pair of glasses expect more than just stylish flair - above all, they expect the greatest wearing comfort.  Plastic glasses  are the reason why modern eyeglass lenses weigh barely anything. They no longer leave behind annoying indentations on the nose. Users do not have to put up with painful headaches caused by heavy glasses anymore – thanks to proper adjustment. The latest developments deliver even more good news: Thanks to center thickness optimization, even thinner eyeglass lenses are now available, and there is no need to compromise on quality.

Eyeglass lenses as thick as glass blocks – fortunately, those days are long gone. Progress is also remarkable in the field of optics thanks to a computer-assisted process. This process makes it possible to reduce the visible edge and center thickness of eyeglass lenses to a technically feasible minimum.

The great news: Thanks to computer-assisted production, eyeglass lenses can often be made much thinner because they are precisely calculated to the shape of the eyeglass frames selected.

The key benefit of center thickness optimization: The eyeglass lens is ground thinner over the entire rear surface. Of course this is done without any modification of the dioptric or prismatic effect. Such lenses differ from traditional eyeglass lenses in one important area: Instead of being manufactured round like a tube, they are approximated to the shape of the final eyeglass lens. This makes it possible to grind the lenses as thick or as thin as needed for glazing.

The following factors play an important role:

  • Shape and size of the eyeglass lens
  • Type of glazing for full frame, nylon or frameless glasses
  • Centering data
  • Eyeglass lens material
  • Dioptric and prismatic effect
  • Type of eyeglass lens (single vision, bifocal, trifocal or progressive lens)

Computer-assisted design is therefore a great solution if a thickness reduction of at least 0.5 mm is reached with the frame and centering data provided. For each order, customer service first determines whether this objective can be attained.
